Lake Bell was born on the 24th of March 1979 in New York to Harvey Siegel and Robin Bell. Her brother, Luke Siegel is the owner of the Raydoor Company, a wall and sliding door manufacturing company based in New York. She and her brother Luke was featured in 2005 in InStyle magazine. Aside from Luke, she has other siblings named, Mackenzie and Courntey.

She grew up in New York and went to Skidmore College in Saratoga and then later on she went to Rose Bruford College in London, UK. In London, she appeared onstage in the productions of The Pentecost and The Seagull. After graduating from college, she lived in London for a year before moving back to the US and lived in Los Angeles.

In Los Angeles, Lake Bell landed her first major role in War Stories, by NBC, opposite actor Jeff Goldblum. Prior to that, she was seen in Slammed in 2001, as Gina Micelli and in Speakeasy in 2002 as Sara Marnikov. Also in 2002, she guest starred in two episodes of ER, playing the role of Jody Holmes. That same year, 2003, she was also seen in I Love Your Work, playing the role of Felicia.

In 2004, Lake Bell appeared in the hit series The Practice, playing the role of Sally Heep. She was seen in the four episodes of The Practice: The Firm, Comings and Goings, New Hoods on the Block and Adjourned. The following year up to 2005, she was in the 14 episodes of Miss Match, playing the role of Victoria. By this time, Lake Bell was in demand for Hollywood television shows and was one of the fastest rising stars on TV.
